It’s hard to believe it has been a year since the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021.
It was a terrible day for America and a terrible day for all of us who love Jesus. I am so proud of how we rose to the occasion together to denounce the violence and the theology and conditions that led to the violence on January 6th. I know we all would like to say that things are much better now than a year ago, and maybe some things are. But I’m confident that we are all still convinced that the problem of “Christian” nationalism is not going away.
We knew that our statement alone was not enough to exorcise the principalities and powers that we are up against, which is why we wrote into the statement itself that we are all committed to taking action.
So I want to invite you to join me in taking three actions on the anniversary of the insurrection on January 6th.
1. READ THE STATEMENT ON JANUARY 6th. Let’s go LIVE on our social media accounts on the anniversary of the insurrection and read our statement. The insurrection began around 1 pm EST, so let’s plan to go LIVE on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms at 1 pm EST (Jan. 6th, 2022) and read the statement in its entirety. You can find it here: https://bit.ly/notochristiannationalism
2. POST THE VIDEO from Ash Wednesday 2021 of faith leaders reading the statement. Let’s use the powerful pre-recorded video of all of us reading the statement and circulate it broadly, inviting new people to sign on. We’ve given a fresh touch to the website, and you can easily access the statement and video. Here’s a direct link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9pWqGWEWNA
3. REACH OUT TO OTHERS. Let’s reach out to a friend or colleague who would benefit from joining the cloud of witnesses saying no to “Christian” nationalism. Over the past year, many new alliances have been formed, and many new friendships have been forged. Let’s continue to reach out to others and equip them with resources and organizations that can help us counter the forces of racism, white supremacy, and nationalism.
As always, I’m honored to stand with all of you at such a time as this. I’m looking forward to all that 2022 holds for us.
