But, I don’t agree with Elizabeth and others using her wounded experience as the platform to minimize virginity and purity.

I think the analogy can and will be abused.

Is there is some truth behind the gum reference for women and men. Who don’t reach out to Jesus for his healing? Men and women’s should goal towards one man and one woman as the ideal. There is some truth and people have been wounded because they didn’t save themselves for their spouse or husband. Do they live in shame and in the shadow of that… they don’t have to. But we are not easily free from consequence of our own volition, and unfortunately maybe violation.

Your identity shouldn’t wrapped up in your sexual “virginity,” and we should no longer recognize anyone according to the flesh. It should be developed by Jesus and the cross. But, I’m not going to go around saying that it doesn’t matter how you live or what you do.

I guess we don’t know how she would have felt in the absence of that teaching, but she certainly seems to believe it was a part of the damage, not a symptom of it.

And a person saying I feel like I was treated like “a used piece of gum.”

I wonder if that is how the description came about, by people recognizing that this is the way people FEEL after a certain event takes place.

So I think it’s a valid description of how someone might feel.

I’m not sure it is good for you to say about someone. That person has lost his OR her virginity they are now a “used piece of gum.”

I guess guys may not display it, but personal shame, guilt and social from sexual abuse or promiscuity is a symptom.

The last part is controversial. I think the “chewed up piece of gum” bit is blown out of the water though.

I think if your offended by the picture the gum analogy paints rather than lowering the bar of sexual purity or virginity. We should promote healing and purity in Jesus.

Not to victimize the victim, but there is a journey of healing that will need to take place so the person again sees themselves as pure before God and everyone else. Without minimizing virginity and sexual purity.

I believe through the blood, healing, forgiveness and power of God viriginity is restored. It’s a mystery.

Even though Jesus saw the prostitute as pure daughter, yourself and society may not agree.

It took a lot of years for me to see myself as pure even though I knew God healed me and made me pure again. I could go on….

If there are Christians and people out there who are super judgmental about virginity and purity I’m thankful that I don’t hang out with any of them. Maybe I missed that baggage by not growing up in the Christian setting.
