As America celebrates the life and witness of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King today, Red Letter Christians across the country hear the cries of #BlackLivesMatter and #ICan’tBreathe, reverberating with the urgency of Dr. King’s own voice. We remember how, in his letter from a Birmingham Jail, Dr. King said:
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice.
As we remember Dr. King, we join our voices with his to say again in the 21st century, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes.
